ARNO PROFILE SYSTEM

The Arno Profile System (APS) is a temperament assessment developed by Richard and Phyllis Arno for their Christian counseling approach, Creation Therapy. It explores a person’s natural tendencies and needs in relationships. Within their framework, temperament is understood as an inborn part of how someone responds to life and others.

Covered Areas of Temperament Therapy

The questionnaire produces a profile covering three areas:

  • Inclusion: Social interaction, belonging, and involvement with others

  • Control: Decision-making, responsibility, independence, and leadership

  • Affection: Emotional closeness, affection, and deep personal relationships

Each area considers two dimensions:

  • Expressed: How much you tend to initiate interaction, responsibility, or affection.

  • Wanted: How much you desire to receive involvement, direction, or affection from others.

For example, someone might rarely initiate social contact but strongly want others to invite them. What they show outwardly may differ from what they need inwardly.

The APS uses five temperament categories: Melancholy, Choleric, Sanguine, Phlegmatic, and Supine. A person can show different temperament patterns across the three areas, so the profile offers more detail than a single overall label.

In counseling, the results can support conversations about strengths, communication, boundaries, and meeting needs constructively. The APS is a Christian counseling framework, not a test that diagnoses depression, anxiety, or other mental health conditions. Results are best treated as a starting point for discussion, alongside the person’s experiences and circumstances.

How does the Test work?

You complete the Arno Profile System (APS) through a short questionnaire, followed by a review with a trained provider.

1. You receive the questionnaire. Your provider will send an online link. It generally takes about 10-15 minutes to complete.

2. You answer questions about your usual tendencies. Follow the instructions and answer honestly, rather than choosing what you think someone expects.

3. Your responses are processed. The APS system generates a written temperament report for the provider to review.

4. You discuss your profile. The review explores your needs in Inclusion, Control, and Affection, including differences between what you express and what you want from others. The conversation connects the results with your relationships and everyday experiences.

“The Arno Profile System explores temperament and relationship needs in three areas: Inclusion, Control, and Affection. Through a Christian counseling perspective, it encourages greater self-understanding, healthier communication, and intentional personal growth.”
